That Pesky Thing Called Puberty
You’re growing up. Lotsa changes going on, huh? Confusing, yeah. But no need to freak out about it. It’s known as puberty, and it’s totally normal. Here’s the lowdown on what to expect so you don’t get caught off guard.
Breast-ology
Are your breasts beginning to bud? Cool! They’ll gradually get bigger and fuller, and they might even become a little sore. One breast could grow more than the other at first, but they’ll eventually even out. (Most women have one that’s slightly larger, but it’s usually not too noticeable.) How big or small your boobs become depends on genetics. So when are they fully developed? It usually takes two to three years!
Hairy Scary?
If you haven’t already, you’ll soon grow hair in the pubic area -- that part of your bod that extends from your lower tummy to between your legs. Initially, the hair is soft and there isn’t much of it. Later, it gets a little longer and usually becomes kinky and curly. Right around the time you get pubic hair, you’ll also sprout some under your armpits.
Ugh, Zits!
The pores in your skin produce more oil during puberty, especially on your face. This can cause pimples to pop up. If you have a problem with acne, gently wash your face with antibacterial soap several times a day. Hopefully, getting rid of the excess oil will zap your zits. If it’s severe and won’t clear up, see a dermatologist.
Periods. Period.
Before you start your period, you’ll probably notice yellow or white stains inside your underwear. This is natural moisture from the vagina. It’s perfectly normal and is a sign that menstruation will probably start in about six to 18 months. Although most girls get their first period between 11 and 14 years old, it can come as early as 8 or as late as 17. Since it’s pretty unpredictable, it’s a good idea to have some pads stashed away for when it does catch you by surprise.
Oh, No … B.O.
Your sweat glands become larger and more active as you get older, so you sweat more. And it doesn’t exactly smell so fresh. That means it’s time to pay particular attention to your hygiene. Be sure to wash under your arms when you shower, and by all means, get yourself a stick of deodorant or antiperspirant.

I thought I would never start my period! All of my friends had but i hadn't. I got to the point that I wanted to start it just so that I wouldnt be left behind all of my frinds and so i could get boobs!!! but for me it didnt happen until i was almost 15! so here is too all you late bloomers! dont worrie! it will happen and when it does your going to wish you never you did! so stop taking it for grantid because when it comes its hell!

I think your site has some good information for young ladies, I also think some important information was left out...such as how long does the period last...cramp talk....what it feels like and how to treat it. We women sure have to endure a lot and I hear about alot of girls still being "surprised" when they get their period due to the fact that moms are still not talking to their daughters beforehand....this is one thing you do not want your daughter/s being misinformed about....please....dish it all out....the girls need to know...to save them some awful embaressment.....thank you

Why?
Why are kids getting wanting to get to puberty so quickly? I'm 16 with FF boobs, started my periods when I was 9 ( they stopped when I was 13 cause of eating disorders) and tbh its not that great to be honest. If your not a teenager yet, don't bother trying to be one. Enjoy your childhood rather than worrying about whether your gentic cycles is 'ordanry'. ;D

I have PCOS (Polysystic Ovarian Syndrom) which creates a hormome inbalance in my bosy causing my body no to have the natural puberty cycle. I don't have my period, and I am probably not going to be able to have kids. I have cists on my Ovaries which hurt very very badly!

I have all those simtoms of the period part (bout the white or yellow part), but I haven't had my period yet though. Does it take 6 to 18 monthes for real? That's forever. I've had those white or yellow stuff for a while now, and I'm almost 14. :S It's quite embarressing, cause all my friends have there periods, and I don't. . . All my friends have gotten their periods except me and I'm a few months older than most of them, they all talk about how it sucks and I don't know anything about it! My friends say I'm lucky, but I don't feel that way. I feel like a child, I know most girls dread getting their period, but I want to I feel really left out in my group of friends and I hate it. For all you girls who are late bloomers don't worry...Most of my friends had their periods about a year or two before me (I'm 14) and I got mine at a school dance about 3 weeks before my 13th birthday. So I've had mine a little bit over a year and I didn't see changes like with my boobs for about 6-8 months. I used to be really self-concious...I'm only like 32 or 34 A i think, ya pathetic, but hey, who cares? I mean I'm still growing & i got time & I, as well as all you other girls, will get boobs eventually...but then my mom said that women in my family are slow at getting them, and ya, women in my family also have big boobs. So don't worry if you still don't have the size you want cz we're young & have plenty of time for them to grow.

I know what it is like, because I am 12 and WICKED short (4 foot 6) and have boobs. So everyone calls me fun-size and stuff so I feel left out. But then it's wierd because people first look at me and say, Oh aren't you a sweet little kid, Then I turn around and there like," Oh nevermind." because I have boobs. And that whitish stuff means you will have your period in six monthes to a year. Sometimes even a little more.

Thank you for this site. I have raised a son,he is 24,I have 2 duaghters,8 and 3,My 8yr old started growing pubic hair when she was seven,and now the hair is getting darker,she has even started to have a little B.O,and I have noticed a slite whiteness on her underwear.I have to admit I dont like the idea that she is starting puberty so early,but just because I was 16teen befor I had a real and true period, does not mean my daughter will start at the same time I did,and as for the Boobs ,I pray she does not get them to young,I rember thinking I would never get a peroid. But the best advice I was given was from my Dad,yes my Dad. Dont be so quick to grow up,it will happen when your body is ready,and it wont be fun ,because some girls have pain with their periods and some dont,some have mood swings an some dont,No 2 girls are alike,your time will come when it comes, and if the people around you have to tease and make fun, just remind them that it will be there turn one day and they should be ashamed of teasing anyone ,teasing and bullying just shows how childish they are.Boys have their own trouble with puberty,maybe not what you girls go threw ,but they have to worry about other more noticable things popping up when they least expect it to happen. Thanks Dad, maybe that advice will help another girl feel better about whats on the way for her and her body.

When I was eleven all of the girls at my school were talking about their periods but none of them had started. We all thought it would be cool and make us older , we all wanted to start. When I did start my period I realized it wasn't cool and I didn't feel older. So enjoy your period life as long as you can !!!!

any girls who need info about ur period....u WILL GET IT SOMETIME trust me u will, it usually lasts 4-7 days, some girls get horrible cramps and stomachaches(me) and tums help this....i recommend pads cuz tampons can leak wich is really embarrassing....u cant swim, u will prob be a little more sensitive when ur on it, but some girls will not be affected by it atall. but until u get it just relax and stop worrying it will come enjoy the freedom while u can :))))))))

Hey girls I'm a mom of 3 girls. My oldies 1 is 12 going on 13yrs and my second oldies is 9 yrs and the youngest is 8. My 13yr old is starting Jr. high this year and she hasn't started her period yet either. I as a mom was hoping it would happen during the summer so she wouldn't be embarrassed like i was in 6Th grade. My mom never told me anything about it. I had to figure it out myself. But if you're open about it with your mom like I am with my 2 older girls you don't have to worry about it. Your moms have periods and I'm sure they shave. My oldies came right up to me and asked "Can I start shaving my legs?" I told her yes. I went out the next day and bought her razor and shaving cream. No problem. My 9 yr old jt asked me 3 days ago to start buying her training bras. I went out and got them for her. She has buds now.. So girls If your that excited to start your period then don't be so scared to talk with your mom. She knows it going to happen sooner or later but why wait for later.. P.S. so u don't have an accident at school wear pantyliners but also carry a pad with you just in case.... For all the late bloomers

Hi, I am 12 and haven't had my period yet but my mom says that I will have it soon because I have brown discharge. Listen, When you start to have your discharge keep some toilet paper in your underwear. It will feel better and not stain your underwear. Now as for shaving, If you are scared about asking your mom then just show her how much hair is there and tell her it ticklles (only if it is true!) Use in the shower lotion after shaving because it is easyer and will help prevent razor burn! About the boobs, YOU DO NOT WANT BIG ONES!!! If you have big boobs, then when you are older, like grandma or sometime around this age like wrinkles and stuff (maybe, maybe not) most likely your boobs will be down to your knees! Do you want boobs to your knees? eww!!!!!! About pimples. You may get some on your back and face and maybe even chest and butt. you can get them just about everywere but if you wash everyday then they will be manageable. I wash my face and back with clean and clear and it has helped a lot! Boys.... My friends have all had boyfriends but none of the boys in my class like me so I don't worry about it and I just want you to know that don't feel bad if you dont have a boyfriend. Also DO NOT WORRY ABOUT WIEGHT! If you are skinny or on the bigger side, just excersize and stretch every day. Also run. You don't kneed to do anything about your period because it will not be fun and it will not end any sooner if you start sooner. If you are worried about your period happening in school then wear a pad or carry one! If you excersize a lot and/or if your parents are devorsed and have a lot of responsibilities your period may come sooner. About your boobs being bigger faster, well there is nothing you can do to make them bigger, sorry. Hope these helped!

ok i went down 2 my moms flat chested came back 2 my grandparents 3 wks later and i have knots as my mom calls them but they feel more like cherries. i go to middle school (6th grade) in 9 days. i am hoping to be more developed by then 2 avoid being called flat chested like in 4 n 5 . but they really hurt 24/7 is there anything i can do about that?

I do the same thing, but it doesn't hurt it just bleeds like crazy but I would use hair removal cream. Leave it on for like five minutes then you use a little tool and it scrapes the cream off and they hair with it. Bad thing is that it isn't as effective as shaving and if you have sensitive skin you can't use it. Just ask your Momma or someone like that.

I'm a puberty reck! I have discharge and cramps and a need a padded bra. I have lower back pains ( sometimes a sign that you will get your period).And i need 2 know more!!!!!!!!!!! Hey girlss don't worry I'm 15 and just got my period and it doesn't come fast ! Trussstt me it seems like Normal discharge but then you wipe after unineating and your like hmmm pink ? Haha but. It's not bad at all ! As for boobs I didn't even start wearing a bra untill going into the 8th grade so I was 13 ? Haha and I'm a gymnast and if you DONT want it them sports help tremendously ! EWWWWWW! hahah i have had my period already and at first i had to use like 10 pads a day and it like LEAKED threw my pants that were really light colored but no1 noticed thank freaking GOD!!! hahahh but it was weirddd! haaah and i HATE acne! but i hardly ever get it and if i do then i put a little dab of toothpaste on em before i go to sleep and wash my face in the morning and they are like almost all gone cuz i gess it just dries them up or somethin!! but yea hope this helped!! and if u are in school when u have ur period make sure u have extra pads in yur backpack or locker & if it leaks thru ur pants then have extra pants too!!!! ahah

Just like a bunch of other girls that have said that all thier friends have their periods and stuff, just know that you totally aren't alone. I'm one of them. I'm 14 and have been having the discharge for a LONG time. Probly for like 2 years. Anyway, i have all of those signs checked off (pubic hair, armpit hair, discharge, BO, boobs, etc...) My boobs aren't huge or anything, and I don't know who it was but they said that their boobs were itchy??? Well, mine did that. Basically, its normal. Some girls (very few) get it. It just scabs over. Some yellow- orange stuff comes out. All it means is that your boobs are growing rather fast. Don't worry about it tho. If you are worried, talk to your mom or a doctor. Even a teacher is cool. That's what I did. All my friends have theirs and say that you don't want it, but why shouldn't I? My mom said that she NEVER had cramps with hers, and although its a really big pain to plan around your period, I still want it, not to be left out. My friends don't make fun of me or anything, but I still don't want to be left out. I am the only girl in my class who doesn't have theirs. EVERY friend that I have has theirs! I feel sooooo immature! Everyone says that I look like a sophomore and old, but apparently, my period doesn't think so. If anyone has some advice for me, that would be completely apprieciated. Thx!

i started my period today, just out of the blues felt my knickers get wet, went to the toilet and noticed red blood and clumps in my knickers. i have been through about 3 sanitary towels since then! i'm happy i've started but not at the same time, i've always wanted to start because i felt left out. i had discharge in my knickers before i started also, but i had pretty large boobs before i started.. yet no one in my family has big boobs? what does this mean???

Many girls do start their periods at the ages 9-17 or younger its okay if it happens for me i havent started and i dont want it to start but its part of life guys go through it too dont worry your not alone i mean evryonee goes through it i have been getting the discharge since i was 8 and 3 yrs later now i still havent started dont worry i have a 14 yr old sister and she has started and she said you might not want to start cause your stomach will be aching with cramps and i know alot or my age but it helps to know so if you havent started be happy cause it will be a pain even from my mom she said its a pain so i hope you would understand this just take life slow

I haven't had my period or discharge, but my friend has discharge and we talk about it. Pantiliners are these pad type things that you put in your panties. You can put one in your panties every time you have discharge so the discharge won't leave the stains. Hope this answers your question! :)
